How We Assess Your Child
The National Curriculum
We teach and assess the children against the National Curriculum.

The National Curriculum focuses on ensuring children have a breadth of understanding within the knowledge, concepts and skills they learn through application across a wide range of curriculum areas. Rather than moving to the next year group programmes of study, the focus is on moving ‘outwards’, developing deeper understanding and broadening of skills. The Department for Education’s expectation is that by the end of the academic year, the majority of the children should be assessed as being ‘at the expected standard’ for their year groups.
Teacher Assessments
Teachers use a range of quizzing, formal assessments, work scrutiny and pupil voice to make a judgements on whether a child is working Below, Towards, At or Above the expected standard for each subject. The Kaleidascope MAT have put together a list (milestones) of expected standards for all subjects in the National Curriculum.
Reading, maths and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) are assessed using formal written tests three times a year. Writing is assessed by teachers against a framework of expectations.
