Art

What is art at Crockerne?

'Every Child is an Artist' Pablo Picasso

At Crockerne we provide a learning environment that supports our children to develop a practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge and understanding of art and design so that children understand how art is made, have a knowledge of art and art history and can debate and express their views about art.

Children experience valued, quality examples of art, craft and design that are Tradional, Modern and Contemporary and their own pieces of art work are valued in school and by the wider community. For example, our Acorn Nursery's drawing and painting is displayed by our playground as the result of their REAL project 'Can I take a pencil for a walk?' Our Year 3 & 4 children organise an exhibition of their art.

The aims of art and design are:

In KS1

  • to use a range of materials creatively to explore, design and make
  • to us drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • to explore colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space through a wide range of techniques
  • to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of a range of artists, craftmakers and designers so that children are able to describe the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines and can make links to their own work

In KS2

  • to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpting with a range of materals
